It took until the very last match of the regular season to confirm who will join Auckland United in the final and the matchup is now set for Saturday 29 November at 6:00pm at Keith Hay Park.
Heading into the final round, three teams were still in the hunt for the second spot: Eastern Suburbs, CF Wellington United and West Coast Rangers.
The first of them to take the field was CF Wellington United, and they delivered a result few expected. A brilliant strike from Amelia Abbott sealed a 1–0 win over Auckland United, ending the league leaders unbeaten run and lifting the Diamonds into second place overnight. Their victory also shifted all the pressure onto Eastern Suburbs and West Coast Rangers, who were due to play on Sunday.
West Coast Rangers kicked off the day’s action at home against Wellington Phoenix Reserves, needing a near-miracle 14-goal win to stay alive. A 2–2 draw ended their hopes, officially ruling them out of contention.
That left Eastern Suburbs with only one option: win. Playing at Madills Farm, Adam Thurston’s side handled the moment with authority, beating CF Petone 3–0 thanks to a Tayla O’Brien brace and a goal from Ella Findlay. The result pushed them to 20 points and secured their place in the final.
With that, the championship decider is set: Eastern Suburbs will face Auckland United next Saturday at 6:00pm at Keith Hay Park, where the league title will be on the line.
This year, unlike previous editions, the league leader earns the right to host the final.
Only one more weekend remains before we crown the national champions of the women’s Dettol National League Championship driven by Ford.
