This Sunday 7 September the finals of the Delivereasy Chatham Cup and the Kate Sheppard Cup will be played at North Harbour Stadium.
In the first match of the day, Auckland United will look to take the title off last years’ winners, Wellington Olympic, with kick-off at 1:00pm.
Auckland United come into the final off the back of a third-place finish in the Dettol Northern League, securing their return to the Dettol National League Championship after missing out last year. Their Cup run has been strong too. After receiving a bye in round one, José Figueira’s side cruised through the next three matches: a 5-0 away win over Taupo AFC, a 3-0 away victory against Northland FC and a 7-1 triumph against Melville United in their first home match of the competition.
Their most difficult test came in the quarter-finals playing away against Christchurch United. Auckland United went two goals down, but fought back late on to level the match and force extra time. With a great performance by Emiliano Tade, they struck twice more to win 4-2. In the semis, back at home against Nelson Suburbs, Auckland United dominated from start to finish, sealing a comfortable 3-0 win to keep their dream of a first-ever title alive.
Wellington Olympic arrive in fine form as well. They’ve just secured their fifth straight Dettol Central League title and have lost only once all year. The “Greeks”, who lifted the Delivereasy Chatham Cup last season after beating Auckland City FC in the final, are determined to go back-to-back. After their first-round bye, Olympic were drawn away in every round but that didn’t stop their momentum. Paul Ifill’s men went on to beat Petone FC 3-0, Waterside Karori 3-0, Napier City Rovers 3-2, Western Suburbs 3-2 after extra time and finally they edged Eastern Suburbs 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in what was arguably their toughest test.
It all sets up well for a mouth-watering Delivereasy Chatham Cup final – one side chasing their first star, the other determined to defend their crown.
The Delivereasy Kate Sheppard Cup final will also be played on Sunday, 7 September at North Harbour Stadium, with Wellington Phoenix Reserves taking on Auckland United at 4:00pm.
After falling short in the semi-finals last year, the Phoenix Reserves this year reach their first-ever Delivereasy Kate Sheppard Cup final. They’ve been impressive all tournament and will be full of energy and optimism heading into Sunday. Following a first-round bye, they won three consecutive away games: 8-1 against Palmerston North Marist, 1-0 against Wellington United (the Central League champions) and 4-1 against Waterside Karori. In the semi-final, playing at home for the first time, they edged Cashmere Technical 2-1 thanks to a last-minute winner from Amber de Wit. Now, they’ll be chasing revenge against Auckland United, the side who knocked them out in 2024.
Defending champions Auckland United will arrive hungry to retain their crown after losing the NRFL Premiership on the final day last weekend. Like the other finalists, they had a first-round bye. Their campaign began at home with a 4-1 extra-time win over Hibiscus Coast, followed by an 8-0 away thrashing of FC Tauranga Moana. They then knocked out NRFL Premiership champions West Coast Rangers with a 2-1 win in the quarters, before edging Eastern Suburbs 1-0 in the semis.
Tickets for Finals Day are available now on Ticketek: $10 for adults, while kids 14 and under go free.
