Wellington Olympic crowned Central League champions!

Today, Wellington Olympic defeated their classic rivals, Miramar Rangers, 1-0 at David Farrington Park and claimed the Central League title for the fourth consecutive year. The goal was scored by Hamish Watson in one of the last minutes of the game (89).

The Greeks successfully repeated their titles from 2021, 2022, and 2023 after a great season that saw them secure the championship two matches before the league's end, and at their rivals home. Today’s victory extended their winning streak to 18 consecutive games (14 in the Central League and four in the Chatham Cup).

The team, lead by Paul Iffil has lost only one official match this year, which was against Western Suburbs in the second round of the Central League. Before that loss, they not only won the first round of the tournament but also clinched the Charity Cup by defeating Christchurch United FC 3-0.

After the 3-5 defeat against Western Suburbs, who are currently second in the Central League, Wellington Olympic experienced a turning point and has won all their matches since. They’ve scored 68 goals and conceded 16, boasting a goal difference of +52 so far.

Furthermore, The Greeks are currently through to the semifinals of the Chatham Cup, where they will face Coastal Spirit on Sunday, August 18, at 1:00pm at Linfield Park. A win would end Coastal Spirit’s unbeaten run (the only team to not lose an official match in NZF competitions this year) and secure Wellington Olympic a spot in the final, as they chase another title.

The performance positions them as strong contenders for both the Chatham Cup and the National League Championship.

Can Wellington Olympic maintain this level through the final stages of the year?
