Previous encounters:
2019’s South Island derbies took place across the double header weekend, with Canterbury United Pride coming away with two wins. Gabi Rennie and Bel Van Noorden’s first half strikes sealed the 2-0 win deal for the Pride in Dunedin, while the return fixture at English Park was a closer affair. The Pride overturned a first half deficit (going down 2-1 thanks to first half goals from United’s Shontelle Smith and Renee Bacon, answering with a strike from Gabi Rennie). The Pride eventually won 3-2 thanks to two goals from second-half substitute Britney-lee Nicholson.
What they say:
Southern United head coach, Ignacio Sande
“It's great to have the opportunity to play football again in a national competition and with the first game against the Pride, it's the perfect start now. It's something that we always look forward to, playing the Pride and we're quite excited to have them come down here in Dunedin, so people can come and watch.
“The players are ready, they are excited to play the home game against the Pride – you can’t ask for more. We just switching last two weeks, into a hundred percent football mode as they are just finishing a few commitments they have such as exams, but they are looking forward for this.”
Canterbury United Pride captain Rebecca Lake
“Preseason has gone really well this year. I guess it's been a little bit slower than previous years and not as long, but we've got a whole lot of staff who are helping us with trainings. We're doing a lot of fitness, agility, different things like that - we've even got a yoga instructor this year. So all of our recoveries have been going really, really well. So although pre-season has been a lot shorter than previous years, I still think we're definitely on track for a good season.
"We felt like we were really prepared for our first game this weekend against Southern. It's pretty cool that we've also got the shadow squad traveling with us as well - they're going to play a game after us and they'll be able to watch us and we can watch them, which is pretty cool.”
