Kiwis Abroad | Reid joins Kansas on loan

Winston Reid is now one of seven All Whites playing in the MLS (Photosport)

All Whites captain Winston Reid has headed to the United States to join Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Sporting Kansas City on loan from West Ham United.

He is hoping the move will allow him to fully complete his comeback from injury after not playing a competitive club match for two years.

Reid is in line to finally return to regular action when the MLS season gets underway later this month and he is part of an ever-growing contingent of New Zealand internationals playing their trade in that competition.

He becomes the seventh All White on the books of an MLS club for the upcoming campaign, joining the Minnesota United trio of Michael Boxall, Noah Billingsley and James Musa, as well as Bill Tuiloma (Portland Timbers), Deklan Wynne (Colorado Rapids) and Elliot Collier (Chicago Fire). The uncapped Kyle Adams adds to the contingent at Houston Dynamo.

While he has not featured at first-team level for a club since suffering a serious knee injury and seeing his recovery interrupted by several setbacks, he did feature for the All Whites last November, playing the first half as captain in a 3-1 loss to the Republic of Ireland.

The 31-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Kansas after making more than 200 appearances for West Ham and earning 25 caps for the All Whites.
