Brad Conza is survived by his beloved daughter Chloe

New Zealand Football has joined the sporting community in mourning the loss of Brad Conza, who previously served as a strength and conditioning coach for the Football Ferns and most recently performed the same role for the Blacksticks women’s national hockey team.

A leader in his field, Conza’s skills were highly sought after and his extensive experience included working with athletes in both the team environment and private sector. He helped many athletes representing New Zealand perform at their peak in a variety of sports but was best known for his impact in hockey.

He was the lead strength and conditioner for the Blacksticks in their most successful era, which included multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games, two heart-breaking fourths at the London and Rio Olympics and achieving a highest-ever world ranking of third.

Hugely popular with the players and other team staff, Conza was just as vital a presence for the Football Ferns and served the team during the coaching reigns of John Herdman and Tony Readings.

Former Football Ferns defender Kristy Hill says his influence extended well beyond his professional duties.

“B-Rad wasn’t just the Ferns’ strength and conditioning coach,” she says.

“He was the great big smile when we thought there was nothing to smile about. He was the extra shuttle when we didn’t think we had another one in us. He put the fun back in football when we thought there was no more fun to be had.

“He wasn’t just our trainer. He was our friend. He was our inspiration. He always had our back.

“High performance isn’t just about flogging people but creating an environment that gets the best out of them.

“Brad, you helped us thrive and you kept us safe. Your positive energy and love for people will not only live on in your most prized possession, Chloe, but will never be forgotten by the Ferns you helped. Rest in love big man!! We love you!”

Black Sticks veteran Gemma McCaw has also paid tribute to Conza, whom she described as a ‘’very special man”.

“He lit up every room with his smile and he had the most infectious laugh and was the kindest person I’ve ever met. It’s so very sad he is no longer with us in person but his spirit will live on forever.”

Brad Conza sadly passed away on Saturday after suffering from chronic respiratory illness for a number of years.
