For the second season running, All Whites striker Chris Wood has found the net at one of the most famous venues in world football, again scoring at Old Trafford to help Burnley to a famous victory over Manchester United.
Wood was on target last season at the Theatre of Dreams as Burnley held their giant local rivals to a 2-2 draw but the Clarets went one better this morning (NZT) by claiming a memorable 2-0 victory.
It was the first time since 1962 that Burnley had earned an away win over Manchester United and they were set on their course by Wood, who struck shortly before half-time to stun the around 70,000 home fans into silence.
The 28-year-old got in behind Harry Maguire to latch onto a Ben Mee knock down and dispatch an accomplished left-foot finish past David de Gea. It was his tenth goal of the English Premier League season and he has now reached double figures for the third consecutive top-flight campaign since joining Burnley from Leeds United.
Wood’s strike partner Jay Rodriguez doubled Burnley’s advantage in stunning style in the second half, smashing an unstoppable shot past de Gea.
Burnley then put in a fine rearguard display to keep United scoreless and secure one of the most notable results in the club’s history.
“We grinded it out at times but that’s what we’re good at,” Wood said.
“We got the two goals and put in a great defensive performance.”
It was Wood’s second goal in just four days after earlier also scoring Burnley’s first in a 2-1 win over former club Leicester City on the weekend.
The win lifts the Clarets into 13th spot and they are now only four points behind fifth-placed Manchester United.
