Capital and Southern share futsal lead

With all teams now having played two matches each, the Men’s Futsal SuperLeague table is starting to take shape and there are only two sides with perfect records.

Capital and Southern United are leading the way after both pocketing a pair of wins but only one of those teams was in action over the weekend as the second instalment of the home series took place.

In Napier, Capital and Central went up against each other twice while the Waikato Rapids and Bay of Plenty Surge did likewise in Tauranga.

Title contenders Capital had too much class for their neighbours but were made to work hard for their victories, particularly in the second game.

Luc Saker led the charge with a hat-trick in Capital’s opening 6-3 victory while Central player/coach Adam Cowan set an example for his players in the second encounter.

Cowan found the net four times but it still wasn’t enough as Capital ran out 5-4 winners with Lucas Da Silva scoring twice.

The matches between the Rapids and the Surge resulted in contrasting outcomes with the first a closely-fought draw before the Rapids pulled away with a big win in the second.

No player scored more than once first up as the sides settled for a share of the spoils at 3-3 and there were also lots of different names on the scoresheet the following day as the Rapids went on the goal rampage.

Ethan Martin found the net twice and there were six other scorers in the 8-1 victory, the Surge only able to respond once through Tyler Ericksen.

The weekend’s results mean Capital climb to the top of the table with Southern, who were in action a week earlier in the opening bout of the home series.

Southern claimed a pair of victories over fellow South Islanders Canterbury United Dragons while defending champions Auckland and the Northern Comets posted one win each.

The Men’s Futsal SuperLeague continues this weekend with the Northern Travel Series.
