GET IN Q and A – Ken Wallace

As part of its GET IN to Football campaign, New Zealand Football is urging more Kiwis to take up the beautiful game. In the latest of a series of interviews with people already involved in football, we chatted with New Zealand Football Referee Development Manager Ken Wallace about how he got into the game and what he enjoys about it.

How did you get into football?

My parents took me to the local club, where my mates were playing, as a youngster. At primary school we had all-day games of football. Teams were chosen in the morning and the game carried on through morning tea and lunch breaks and then after school.

What do you enjoy about being involved in football?

I enjoy everything about the involvement – the game itself, the technical skills, being able to help others and the camaraderie.

What does your current role in football entail?

Trying to increase the number and quality of referees, answering queries on the Laws of the Game, writing courses, implementing coaching sessions, assessing and coaching referees on games (both live and off video) and administering the match officials in our national competitions.

What are you excited about in your role this year and why?

Some great initiatives in our federations with academies, training and involvement with the secondary schools. Plus, it’s a World Cup year so it will be good to see some of the tactical changes in the game.

Why do you think someone should get involved in football?

Exercise, social cohesion, to meet new people with a common interest and develop friendships. It’s a skilful game for all shapes and sizes.
