Final Round Drama: Four Clubs Battling for Two Places in the Men’s Dettol National League Final

The final round of the Men’s Dettol National League Championship kicks off tomorrow and the two finalists who will compete for the title next week will finally be decided.

With just one match left to play, four teams remain in the race for a place in the Grand Final: Miramar Rangers at the top with 19 points, Wellington Olympic on 18, Auckland City FC on 17, and Western Springs on 16.

While the two Wellington clubs currently hold the strongest positions, there’s a real chance that one of them could miss out — simply because they face each other in the final round. Wellington Olympic host Miramar Rangers tomorrow at 2:00pm at Wakefield Park, meaning at least one of them won’t claim all three points.

However, depending on other results, both Wellington sides could still reach the final, so nothing is guaranteed yet.

This situation opens the door for Auckland City FC, who know that a win in their match would secure their place in the final regardless of what happens elsewhere. The Navy Blues play at home at Kiwitea Street at 2:00pm, where they’ll face Coastal Spirit, who currently sit at the bottom of the table.

Western Springs are the last team still alive in the race, but Scott Hales’ side need more than just their own result to go their way. To have a realistic chance of qualifying, they must win and hope for one of the following scenarios:

Scenario 1:

- Auckland City FC and Wellington Olympic both fail to win.

- If Olympic draw their match, Springs would need a significant win over Birkenhead United to finish with a better goal difference. Olympic currently sit at +8, while Springs are on +5.

Scenario 2:

- Auckland City FC don't win and Miramar Rangers lose to Wellington Olympic.

- In this case, Springs would need to finish with a better goal difference than Miramar, who currently sit at +12.

With so much still on the line, the final round promises plenty of drama and you can watch every match live and free on FIFA+.
