On Friday night in Canberra the All Whites put in one of their best performances against Australia in years, dominating the Socceroos for much of the match, beating them for shots, possession, and passes. But for all the positives at GIO Stadium, the stat that matters is the final score, with Australia’s late goal deciding the game to make it 1-0 in first leg of the Soccer Ashes 2025.

But this isn’t any normal international window. The team have an immediate opportunity to fight back tonight in the second leg at Go Media Stadium.

As a reminder, this series is decided by the winner on aggregate across the two legs. If it is level on aggregate at the end of 90 mins tonight, it will go straight to penalties for trans-Tasman bragging rights.

Likely Line-Up:

With a number of players in pre-season, or managing minutes ahead of a long season, head coach Darren Bazeley hinted in the pre-match press conference that he will be looking to use all six of his subs during the game so the team which starts the match could look very different by the end.

In terms of players who could come in, Finn Surman will be looking to push Tyler Bindon and Michael Boxall for a starting spot after impressing for his club and in the last international window.

Captain Chris Wood said:

"I was definitely disappointed, with the amount of domination and control we had in the game, and chances we had in the game, something that we spoke on as a group...

Thankfully, for me it's a two-legged tie, so I have a chance to put right my input and what I was able to do on the pitch.

So yeah, we've put in a great performance but we need to do even better, raise it another 10 % which is always hard to do in a second game, with flights timing,  turnaround of games, but it's something that we need challenge ourselves to do.

Player to Watch: Nestory Irankunda

We tipped him in the first game and he looked dangerous after he was introduced with 15 minutes left in Canberra.

After an impressive cameo, the 19-year-old Watford attacker will be looking to bring his league form to Aotearoa where he has a good shot at starting.
