While FIFA may technically classify this as an international friendly, it’s hard to argue that Australia vs New Zealand is ever really that. That’s especially true in this series, with the historic Soccer Ashes trophy on the line for only the second time in nearly 70 years.

Both teams know each other well and both are now confirmed to be heading to football’s global showcase in 2026, making this a chance to test themselves and claim bragging rights across the Tasman.

Australia have had the upper hand over the past two decades, but the All Whites arrive in good form. It’s going to be a battle. Should be fun.

Likely Line-Up:

With vice-captain Libby Cacace forced to withdraw, and Marko Stamenić leaving the tour early with a minor injury, head coach Darren Bazeley is without two of his regular starters. But this All Whites squad arguably has more depth than ever, giving Francis de Vries, James McGarry and others the chance to stake their claim.

There’s also a big boost: Ryan Thomas has finally returned to the white shirt after a long absence, something that clearly means a lot to him. He’ll be pushing to get on the field for the first time in nearly six years. Great to see him back.

With two big games against familiar opposition, the element of surprise could prove decisive. Could it be time for 17-year-old Luke Brooke-Smith to make his debut and become the youngest All White since the 1980s?

Midfielder Joe Bell said:

"We know Oz are a strong side, so we're going to need to be at our best. But we're focused on taking steps forward in our game… we're pretty excited with the tactics we’re going into this with, and we’ve got some really exciting players. So, yeah, it’s going to be positive.”

Player to Watch: Nestory Irankunda

If you’re looking for dangerous young attacking talent, look no further than Socceroos wonderkid Nestory Irankunda, who’s been tearing it up at Watford in the Championship. The 19-year-old may have struggled for minutes following his high-profile move to Bayern Munich, but he’s making an impact in England with two goals in four games so far.
