The Ford Football Ferns are back in action this weekend, taking on South American side Venezuela in Spain. It’s the first match since Michael Mayne was appointed head coach, and the team will be looking to build on the momentum from their games against Costa Rica earlier this year.

Here are five reasons you’ll want to set your alarm for 4am to catch the action at Marbella Football Center on Sunday morning.

1. 🆕 A First-Ever International Meeting

This is a new cycle for the team, so why not face an opponent you’ve never met before? New Zealand and Venezuela have never played each other at senior level, so there’ll be an element of the unknown for both sides — and both countries will be keen to make a statement.

2. 🧠 New Coach, New Era

This isn’t just any friendly — it’s the first match for Michael Mayne (or Mayney, as he’s known by all) since being appointed permanent head coach of the Ferns. After introducing new ideas and playing models in previous windows, this is an opportunity to continue that development — always with an eye on qualifying for, and competing at, the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.

3. 📊 Recent Form: Building Momentum

The Ferns kicked off 2025 with a 1–1 draw against Costa Rica in San José, followed by a 1–0 win — starting the year unbeaten.

Venezuela, currently ranked 51st by FIFA, will pose a different challenge. They include former Wellington Phoenix forward Mariana Speckmaier, who will be a real threat up front. But the Ferns will be eager to get results across both matches and continue their strong run of form.


4. 👶 Betsy’s Back

Midfielder Betsy Hassett returns to the Ferns for the first time since becoming a mum, bringing 145 caps’ worth of experience back into the squad.
