Chatham and Kate Sheppard Cups - Round 2 wrap


Round 2 of the Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup and the Chatham Cup took place over the long weekend, with a series of standout results and challengers for glory.

 

In the Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup, holders Eastern Suburbs marched into the next round courtesy of a 4-0 win over Northland FC. Charlotte Lancaster scored seven goals in W-League Palmerston North Marist’s 20-0 demolition of Capital Premier side Upper Hutt City, Coastal Spirit dispatched fellow Mainland Women’s Premiership side Cashmere Technical 4-1 and 2018 winners Dunedin Technical beat Green Island 3-2.

 

Of the Kate Sheppard Cup first time entrants Richmond Athletic FC and Franklin United are the only ones to remain in the Cup, with Richmond Athletic knocking out fellow newcomers Blenheim Valley Sports Club 2-1, and Franklin dispatching Rotorua United 2-0.

 

In the Chatham Cup, Auckland City FC introduced themselves to the competition by beating NRFL Div 1 side Ellerslie AFC. NRFL Div 1 team Waiheke United, meanwhile, reinforced their island fortress with a 12-1 win over FC Whangarei, with Juan Cruz Canay rocketing to the top of the goalscoring charts with a double hattrick in the process. Lower Hutt City celebrated their centenary weekend with a 6-0 win over Island Bay United, spearheaded by Riley Bidois’s hattrick, while holders Napier City Rovers knocked out fellow Central League side Wairarapa United. In the South Island, a late flurry of goals from Green Island AFC eventually secured them a 5-2 win over Northern AFC  by the end of extra time.

The draw for the Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup and Chatham Cup Round 3 matches will take place from 1pm Wednesday, 9 June. Games for Round 3 will take place over the weekend of 19/20 June.
