At New Zealand Football, we believe better coaches create better players, stronger environments, and more well-rounded people.
Our advanced coach development programmes put the coach at the centre of the learning experience, with content designed to be relevant, practical, and tailored to each coach’s unique context.
All courses meet FIFA Coaching Convention standards and are specifically adapted for coaches working in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Advanced Coaching Courses
New Zealand Football (NZF), in partnership with the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), offers a structured suite of advanced coaching courses designed to support coaches working in competitive and high-performance environments.
These nationally and internationally recognised qualifications will help you step confidently into your next coaching challenge.
Each course blends practical, in-person workshops with online learning and is delivered by qualified NZF Coach Developers.
Explore our course options below:
The NZF Junior Level 3 award is the highest award in the Junior pathway. The purpose of the course is to support the coach with a range of tools and skills required to help them meet the needs of this important age group.
The JL3 award covers topics like Skill Acquisition, helping players learn, session design and long term player development amongst other topics. We continue to use the game training methodology and introduce the NZF coaching process to enhance the coaches ability to meet the needs of their players.
The course is a 3 day, face to face course with additional online modules. Coaches are assessed in their own environment within one year of completing the course. The award is attained through an assessment process involving planning, conducting and evaluating a session completed in your own environment with the support of a mentor.
The OFC/NZF C Licence is the entry point into the advanced coaching pathway for Youth and Senior Football team coaches. The course equips coaches with the tools and knowledge needed to support players on aspiring pathways.
Using New Zealand Football’s coaching process, coaches learn how to identify a ‘football problem’ from a game, and design, deliver, and evaluate a training session that addresses it. Our Game Training methodology provides the framework for session design, while we explore techniques such as using game constraints and coaching interventions to improve player understanding.
The course also covers key topics like physical preparation for play, developing your coaching identity, and how vision and philosophy shape effective coaching. However, the core focus remains on practical, effective session delivery.
The C Licence course is delivered over four days in person, blending practical and theory-based learning, with additional online modules before and after the course. The licence is awarded following a post-course assessment, where coaches plan, conduct, and evaluate a session in their own environment with mentor support.
The OFC/NZF Goalkeeping (GK) C Licence is the starting point for coaches working with Youth and Senior goalkeepers on the advanced pathway. The course equips GK coaches with the tools and techniques needed to support players on aspiring pathways.
Coaches learn how to apply New Zealand Football’s coaching process — identifying a ‘football problem’ from a game, then designing, delivering, and evaluating a session to address it. Sessions are built using NZF’s Game Training methodology, with a focus on game design constraints and coaching interventions that help improve player understanding.
Key topics include physical preparation for goalkeepers, understanding yourself as a coach, and how vision and philosophy shape your coaching approach. However, the main emphasis is on delivering effective, practical sessions on the field.
The GK C Licence course is delivered over four days in person, combining practical and theory-based learning, with online modules before and after the course. Coaches complete a post-course assessment involving planning, conducting, and evaluating a session in their own environment, supported by a mentor.
The OFC/NZF Futsal C Licence is the starting point for Youth and Senior team futsal coaches on the advanced coaching pathway. The course equips coaches with the tools and knowledge needed to support players on aspiring pathways.

Sessions are built using NZF’s Game Training methodology, with a focus on game design constraints and coaching interventions to enhance player understanding.
Key topics covered include physical preparation for playing, developing your coaching identity, and how vision and philosophy underpin your coaching approach. However, the main focus remains on delivering effective, practical sessions on the court.

Coaches complete a post-course assessment involving planning, conducting, and evaluating a session in their own environment, supported by a mentor.
The OFC/NZF B Licence is designed for coaches working with senior and older youth players, and is open to coaches who have held a C Licence for at least one year. The course aims to challenge and support aspiring coaches with the tools and knowledge needed to better support their players.
At the heart of the B Licence is the Professional Coaches Model (PCM). Coaches are challenged to deepen their understanding and skills across five key areas: Football Knowledge, Football Training, Match Requirements, Knowing Yourself as a Coach, and Vision and Philosophy. We continue to use New Zealand Football’s Coaching Process and Game Training Methodology as the foundation for designing meaningful sessions that support all four corners of player development.
The in-person component of the course is delivered in two parts, each lasting five days. Between these blocks, coaches complete a series of distance learning tasks, designed to challenge and grow their skills across the PCM framework. These tasks are completed in each coach’s own environment over the course of a ‘season,’ with support from a mentor.
The OFC/NZF B Licence is awarded by demonstrating competency in the course tasks and through a final assessment — planning, conducting, and evaluating a session within your own coaching context.
The OFC/NZF Goalkeeping (GK) B Licence is designed for coaches working with senior and older youth goalkeepers, and is open to coaches who have held a GK C Licence for at least one year. The course aims to challenge and support aspiring GK coaches with the tools and knowledge needed to better support their players.

Coaches are challenged to deepen their knowledge and skills across five key areas: Football Knowledge, Football Training, Match Requirements, Knowing Yourself as a Coach, and Vision and Philosophy. New Zealand Football’s Coaching Process and Game Training Methodology continue to serve as the foundations for developing meaningful GK-specific sessions that support all four corners of player development.

The OFC/NZF A Licence is designed for aspirational coaches working with advanced youth and senior players who are fully immersed in the game. Coaches must have held a B Licence for a minimum of one year. Building on the B Licence, the A Licence adds further layers of knowledge and skills to support each coach’s development through the Professional Coaches Model (PCM).
The A Licence continues to centre around the Game Training Methodology, New Zealand Football’s Coaching Process, and the Four Corner Model of player development. However, coaches are expected to demonstrate greater creativity in applying different coaching tools to meet the specific needs of their players, in their own context and aligned with their own coaching philosophy.
The in-person component of the course is delivered in two parts, each lasting seven days. Between these blocks, coaches complete a series of Distance Learning Tasks designed to challenge and refine the knowledge and skills required to coach at a high level. These tasks are completed within each coach’s own environment over the course of a ‘season,’ with the support of a mentor.
The OFC/NZF Pro Diploma is designed for coaches holding an A Licence who are working in international, professional club, or high-performance environments. This intensive course focuses on how coaches shape and lead their environments through effective leadership.
Throughout the programme, coaches are exposed to best practices not only in football but also in other sports and non-sport industries where high performance is critical.
The course includes four face-to-face workshops, each lasting five days, delivered over a 14-month period. Between these workshops, coaches complete a comprehensive series of distance learning tasks.
Upon completion of the course, each coach must submit a detailed report based on their personal leadership journey and a visit to a high-performance environment. This report, along with a final interview, forms part of the overall assessment of the coach’s competency.
