Andrew Durante has confirmed his retirement from international football.
The 35-year-old centre-back, who played 24 ‘A’ internationals for the All Whites since making his debut back in 2013, made the decision to hang up his boots after the Intercontinental Playoff in Peru.
He told his team-mates after the All Whites performed admirably against the World No 10 but went down 2-0 in a fever pitch atmosphere in Lima.
“I have [retired from international football], I just didn’t need it to be an official announcement or anything. After the game I said to the players that it was my last international so I won’t be continuing on,” Durante told the media at a conference in Wellington.
“It’s a whole new cycle coming in now and I will be 40 playing at the next World Cup so I decided it was my time to go.”
The Wellington Phoenix skipper, who has been a popular member of any team he is a part of, said he would walk away with some fond memories of competing in international football.
He enjoyed the biggest games on the biggest occasions the most, most notably the intercontinental Playoffs against Mexico and Peru, and the FIFA Confederations Cup this year in Russia.
“I’ve just loved it,” he said. “I’ve been honoured and proud that everyone has accepted me into the All Whites the way that they have. I feel like I have fit in seamlessly since day one. It was an awesome time. I got to visit so many different countries and cultures and I’m just proud to have represented the Silver Fern.
“It’s always going to be an empty feeling inside my career but I thought we did really well over there. We gave it a good crack against a very good team but it wasn’t to be.”
Durante also gave a glowing endorsement of former coach Anthony Hudson who has decided not to continue with the national team.
“I can’t speak for the general public but I know within the group he was an awesome coach and a really detailed coach. Every camp was very intense and very detailed and structured. You just knew going into every game that you would be prepared. You knew exactly what the other team’s strengths and weaknesses were, the training sessions were always challenging and he always pushed us,” he said. “In terms of the playing group, I think he will be very fondly remembered.”
So will Durante. An Australian-born All White who gave his all for New Zealand during his international career.
