New Zealand’s campaign at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco has come to an end following a determined defeat to Germany.

The Kiwis were beaten 2-0 by the European champions, who secured top spot in Group A with a perfect nine points after winning all three of their matches.

Drawn into a challenging group alongside hosts Morocco, Argentina and Germany, Alana Gunn’s side finished fourth in Group A.

Goalkeeper Nienke Holland, who was also selected for this year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, was once again a standout performer for New Zealand in Morocco.

The AZ Alkmaar shot-stopper produced a number of impressive saves to keep her side in the contest despite Germany’s dominance in possession and attack throughout the first half.

Holland was finally beaten just before the halftime whistle when Laura Ernst rose highest to head home Germany’s opener from a corner.

Germany doubled their lead after the break through Clara Choisy, who calmly slotted her shot past Holland in the 56th minute.

Already facing an uphill battle, New Zealand’s task became even tougher when Emmie Butler was shown a second yellow card and sent off, reducing her side to 10 players. Despite being down a player, the Kiwis prevented Germany from extending their lead as the score remained 2-0 until full-time.

Germany advanced to the Round of 16 as Group A winners, with Argentina and Morocco also progressing to the knockout stages.
