New Zealand Football are pleased to announce that José Figueira has been appointed as head coach of the New Zealand Men’s U-20 team.
Formerly an assistant coach of the side during the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025 cycle, Figueira takes over the role from Chris Greenacre, who departs after being appointed head coach of Wellington Phoenix’s A-League Men’s team.
Figueira, who holds an OFC Pro Coaching Licence, the top tier of coaching qualifications, brings a wealth of experience within the New Zealand football system to the role, including previously serving as head coach of the New Zealand Men’s U-17 side at the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2019.
Domestically, he led both Auckland City FC and Team Wellington to multiple national league titles, as well as winning the OFC Champions League with both clubs.
In 2018 he took Team Wellington to the FIFA Club World Cup, where the side drew with UAE’s biggest side Al Ain before being eliminated on penalties.
Most recently, he played a key role at Auckland United as head coach of their National League side, qualifying the team for the Championship phase for the first time, as well as overseeing development, overhauling the club’s talent strategy, and supporting the nurturing of players into the professional game.
José Figueira, Men’s U-20 head coach, said:
“It is a real privilege to take on this role and continue the great work Greeny has done across the previous cycle.
“From my time with the team as assistant coach, I’ve seen the level of talent we have coming through, so I’m really looking forward to getting back on the grass as we look to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027 in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
“As U-17 head coach I got to work with a number of players who have since gone on to become key members of the All Whites, so I’m excited about continuing that journey to support the development of the next generation.
“Football is going from strength to strength in New Zealand, so it is an honour help continue and support that growth.”
Figueira will begin in the role immediately ahead of the side taking part in the OFC Men’s U-19 Championship, the qualifying tournament for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027.
New Zealand have been draw to play Tahiti, Fiji, and Vanuatu at the tournament, set to be played in Apia Samoa from 2 September 2026.
