Coastal Spirit have been crowned Dettol Southern League champions for the first time in their history, clinching the title on the final day of the season.
Robbie Stanton’s side went into the last round knowing that a win would seal the title. If they dropped points, they would have to rely on results from Cashmere Technical and Christchurch United.
Their opponents UC Football also had plenty on the line, needing points to confirm their place in the league for next season, or hope Selwyn United slipped up.
But at home, where they’ve been strong all campaign, Spirit delivered once again. Goals from Liam Cotter and Max Chrétien sealed a 2–0 victory, sparking celebrations as the club lifted the league trophy for the very first time and booked another spot in the Dettol National League Championship.
The battle for the South Island’s final Championship place is still alive and will be decided between Cashmere Technical and Christchurch United. Cashmere currently sit second on 39 points, having completed their fixtures. Christchurch, just two points behind in third, have one game still to play away to Nelson Suburbs this Saturday at 12pm.
At the other end of the table, Selwyn United were beaten 5–2 by Nelson Suburbs and finished bottom of the league, confirming their relegation for next season.
