New Zealand’s men’s U-16 side have made a statement in their opening match of the FIFA Youth Series, securing a thrilling 3–2 victory over hosts Switzerland at FIFA’s Home of Football in Zurich.
Head coach Martin Bullock’s team made a dream start, taking the lead just three minutes in. Auckland United’s Matias Nunez pounced on a misplaced pass from the Swiss goalkeeper, rounded him confidently, and slotted the ball into an empty net to open the scoring.
Switzerland responded in the 15th minute through midfielder Bright Ocran, who finished smartly from close range to level the match at 1–1 heading into half-time.
But New Zealand came out firing in the second half. Just four minutes after the restart, captain Ethan Dyer restored the lead with a powerful header from a corner, sparking jubilant celebrations from his teammates.
The young Kiwi team extended their advantage in the 54th minute. After a Swiss save pushed a shot into a dangerous area, Wellington Phoenix’s Cailean Hamilton reacted quickest to tap the ball home and make it 3–1.
Switzerland pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute through a penalty to set up a tense finish, but New Zealand held firm to record a memorable 3–2 win, a historic result for the side and a strong start to their FIFA Youth Series campaign.
