Pre-match buildup to the NZF Charity Cup showdown between Wellington Olympic and Christchurch United.

The first official match of the year kicks off this Sunday, March 3rd, at 1:00 PM, set against the backdrop of Martin Luckie Park in Wellington.

Wellington Olympic's journey to the Cup has been nothing short of remarkable. Dominating the Central League, they clinched the championship with an impressive record of 15 wins out of 18 matches and a staggering goal difference of +50. Rupert Kemeys’ team were undefeated in the National League Championship, winning 7 out of 9 matches, culminating in a thrilling final victory against Auckland City FC. While they faced a tough challenge in the final, they emerged triumphant with a 2-0 win, seizing the title of National League champions for 2023.

The team will be without their key player Gianni Bouzoukis this season, who was the top scorer during the 2023 National League Championship. However, known for their offensive style and knack for decisive victories, Wellington Olympic boasts talents like Jack-Henry Sinclair, Hamish Watson and the captain Ben Mata, who were important for the team with 10 goals between them in the final phase.

Meanwhile, Christchurch United emerged victorious in the Southern League, boasting an impressive record of 16 wins out of 18 matches and a remarkable goal difference of +60. While they narrowly missed out on the National League Grand Final, their season's success was evident with a third-place finish. The team secures their spot in the NZF Charity Cup by winning the 2023 Chatham Cup with a narrow victory in penalty shootouts against Melville United, after a thrilling 2-2 draw in regular time.

However, Christchurch United faces a new reality this season, with key players such as Sam Philip, Eoghan Stokes, and Edward Wilkinson no longer part of the squad. They will also start the season with a new coach (Ryan Edwards), who was confirmed in November of last year and will seek to maintain the club's level and results in 2024.

The NZF Charity Cup 2024 will be up for grabs this weekend, who will emerge victorious and claim the title?

The match will be broadcast live and for free on FIFA+.
