Waitakere City advance in qualifying

Waitakere City FC will represent New Zealand at the Australasian Finals of the 15th Grade Manchester United Premier Cup competition after taking out the four-team National Finals on Sunday.

The west-Auckland side secured their qualification by claiming a 1-0 victory over Onehunga Sports in the final of the event played at Bruce Pulman Park in Papakura.

After playing a round-robin competition on Saturday, Waitakere City finished top of the group phase, ahead of Onehunga Sports on goal difference, followed by Christchurch side Cashmere Technical and Wellington’s Western Suburbs.

Waitakere then secured their berth in the final with a 4-0 semi-final victory over Western Suburbs while Onehunga Sports earned their place with a 2-1 result over Cashmere Technical.

After their group phase clash produced a 1-1 draw, Waitakere City won the showcase match with a first half goal from Alex Greive.

Waitakere City will travel to Sydney for the weekend of May 10-11 for the final phase of qualifying for the World Finals to be held in Manchester later this year.
