Onehunga Sports will travel to Australia for the Pacific Finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup after winning the New Zealand National qualifying event on Sunday at McLennan Park in Papakura.
Having finished Saturday’s first day of competition of the tournament for players under 15 atop the standings, Onehunga Sports earned a semi-final clash with fourth-placed Wellington club Waterside Karori.
The Auckland club, which represented the Pacific Region at the 2013 World Finals in Manchester, were 5-1 winners of that contest as they moved into the final.
There they met Oratia United after the west-Auckland side prevailed 2-1 in extra time over Christchurch club Cashmere Technical in the other semi-final clash.
Oratia, who were second after the opening day, made a dream start in the final: taking the lead mid-way through the first half via Gabe Moselen.
But the central Auckland club responded, drawing level via Hojae Lee just before halftime and the second half saw Onehunga Sports add four more goals to their tally; Lee scoring his second of the day, Leon van den Hoven getting on the score sheet while Max Mata hit a double.
Onehunga Sports will take part in the Pacific Finals in Australia (date to be confirmed) where a place in the World Finals in Manchester will be up for grabs.
