AUCKLAND – Onehunga Sports have won the New Zealand final of the Manchester United Premier Cup defeating Mainland Football’s Cashmere Technical 4-0 at ASB Football Park.
The win sees Onehunga advance to the Pacific Final to be held in Sydney over the weekend of 27 to 28 April.
A devastating opening fifteen minutes saw Onehunga take total control of the match and all but book their place in Sydney by half time.
The game was only 45 seconds old when Liam Jordan opened the scoring after getting in behind the opposition and burying the ball into the far bottom corner across the Cashmere ‘keeper.
A perfect start got even better only a couple of minutes later when Ben Mata released Sarpreet Singh who beat two defenders in the penalty area before drawing the goalkeeper and coolly slotting home for a well taken goal and a 2-0 lead.
2-0 became 4-0 shortly after with Jordan adding another cool finish and Ben Payne putting the match to bed with a thumping header from a Singh corner.
Cashmere stemmed the flow in the second half, keeping a clean sheet but the damage was done and Onehunga were crowned New Zealand champions and join the with six Australian state winners for one place in the 2013 Global Finals.
In 2011 Onehunga become the second ever New Zealand club to qualify for the global finals after Auckland’s Central United, who reached Manchester in 2007 and 2008.
Onehunga’s class of 2011 featured several players now in the frame for selection in Darren Bazeley’s Young All Whites side in preparation for the OFC U-17 Championship in Vanuatu next month.
Previous Global Finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup have given the world its first glimpse of many of today’s superstars including Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Fernando Torres (Chelsea), Lionel Messi (Barcelona) and Carlos Tevez (Manchester City).
More recent graduates of the competition include England starlet Jack Wilshere who competed for Arsenal in 2007.
