A large number of domestically-based players can put their hand up for international selection in New Plymouth on Sunday with the New Zealand A squad named to meet the Wellington Phoenix at Yarrow Stadium.

A core of talented youngsters including Clayton Lewis, Moses Dyer, Joel Stevens and Logan Rogerson – part of the Men’s U-17 squad – get their latest opportunity in what has been busy few months on the international scene.

The contingent of 2015 U-20 and U-23 players will be joined by senior internationals Glen Moss and Michael McGlinchey as All Whites coach Anthony Hudson finalises his travelling party for the upcoming clash with Myanmar.

Hudson says the players brought together have a ready-made chance to push their case for inclusion for the September 8 international and beyond.

“Everyone involved are players in and around the All Whites so it’s a really good opportunity for us to look at a few players locally in this environment,” Hudson said.

“Players have got an opportunity to stake a claim, if not for the Myanmar trip, but the upcoming games as well. It’s a good opportunity for them.”

With the team assembling in New Plymouth on Friday, Hudson added that the time ahead of Sunday’s game will be just as important as the 90-minute hit out against a Phoenix side in their pre-season preparations for the coming A-League season.

“It’s an opportunity to spend a couple of days in the hotel, get to know the players a bit more and have some time together pre-September. To get contact time and time on the training pitch is really, really vital.”

New Plymouth District Council Manager Events and Venues Ron Murray said: “We’re excited to have these players appearing at Yarrow Stadium – it’s an amazing opportunity for our football fans to see talent of this calibre on our very own regional Stadium.

“Our local young players can be inspired by the likes of some these well-known football players, such as Manny Muscat, Roly Bonevacia, Ben Sigmund, Roy Krishna, Andrew Durante, Louis Fenton,  Michael McGlinchey and Alex Rufer.”
