AUCKLAND – Football Fern Sarah McLaughlin netted a national league record five-goals in Hamilton on Saturday, firing Waikato-Bay of Plenty to a 7-0 win over Auckland Development to keep her side’s ASB Women’s Youth League hopes alive.

The win sees Waikato bounce back after last week’s opening defeat and move to within one point of Northern Conference leaders Northern Football and Auckland Football who played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at Fred Taylor Park.

In the Southern Conference, Central Football fought back from a 1-2 halftime deficit to beat Football South 5-3 on Sunday and take the outright lead in the regional standings as Capital were held to a 1-1 draw by Mainland Football in Christchurch on Saturday.

Seven-cap international McLaughlin struck twice in the first half and three times after the interval to beat the four-goal record held by eight players.

Holly Patterson was also to the fore in the demolition, setting up three of McLaughlin’s goals while Olivia Chance set up one and scored one herself with Kate Loye adding the final goal a minute from time.

In Whenuapai, Megan Lee chipped Auckland goalkeeper Ashleigh Cox to give Northern a sixth minute lead but Rosie White struck an immediate reply for the visitors from the edge of the area, and then contributed to Auckland’s second in the 24th minute with a powerful free kick that Erin Naylor could only spill at the feet of Stephanie Skilton.

Goals to Hannah Wilkinson and Katie Bowen put the home side in front but a 35 metre special from White in the 89th minute shared the points.

At Park Island in Napier, Central’s Rhonda Bridges helped herself to a second half hat trick while Jane Barnett – after 50 seconds – and Coral Seath also scored for the home side.

For Football South, Sam Muirhead and Mary Fraser gave the visitors the lead and Sahara MacDonald netted a late consolation.

At Christchurch’s Linfield Park Capital needed an 81st minute goal from captain Renee Leota to finally beat impressive Mainland keeper Victoria Esson after Gabrielle Brodie put the home side ahead after an hour of play.

The 2011 ASB Women’s Youth League is the first of three seasons of the national league with age-restrictions and limited amount of over-age plays. The league returns to unrestricted status in 2014.
