AUCKLAND – Former Australian national futsal team coach Scott Gilligan has been appointed to coach New Zealand’s national futsal team, the Fustal Whites.
Gilligan, was at the helm of the Futsalroos between 2001 and 2008 and coached their women’s team from 1997 to 2000, after a four year representative career that included two World Championships.
More recently, Gilligan was in charge of futsal development for the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and has been a FIFA Futsal Instructor since 2005.
New Zealand Football’s Futsal Development Manager Dave Payne was pleased to secure the experience of Gilligan.
“We know Scott’s quality after his work with futsal in this country through his previous Oceania role and his experience at international level with Australia will be invaluable as the team builds towards qualifying for major events,” Payne said.
Gilligan’s first task as national team coach will be attending this weekend’s NZF Futsal Workshop at the ASB Stadium in Kohimarama attended by highly regarded Spanish national futsal team coach Jose Venancio Lopez Hierro.
Regarded as one the best futsal coaches in the world, Hierro recently led Spain to their sixth European title, their third since he took over the role in 2007.
In addition, Hierro has won three Spanish Super Futsal Cup titles, a European Futsal Club Champions title and a silver medal at the FIFA 2008 Futsal World Cup.
The visit, in which Hierro will deliver a number of theory and practical session to futsal coaches and development staff from around New Zealand and the Pacific comes after OFC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Royal Spanish Football Association in May 2011.
Gilligan replaces Matt Chandler who took up a job as the Director of Football at Redlands FC in Australia in November last year.
